Chapter 10 - ASHES AND CROWNS

Alina walked up the grand staircase for what she knew might be the last time. The mansion felt different today—heavy, tense, humming with the static electricity of an impending explosion.
She pushed open the doors to Damon’s study.
Damon stood by the window, a glass of straight bourbon in his hand. His knuckles were bruised and bloodied from where he had slammed Petrov against the table. He didn't turn around as she entered.
"You shouldn't have been in that room," he said quietly, his voice devoid of its usual sharp edge, sounding uncharacteristically exhausted.
"I was doing my job," Alina replied softly, stepping closer to him.
Damon finally turned around. He looked at her—really looked at her—as if memorizing every line of her face. He set the glass down on the desk, closed the distance between them, and gently cupped her cheek with his bruised hand.
"Petrov knows about you now," Damon murmured, his thumb brushing across her cheekbone. "He thinks you're my weakness. Which means the moment he gets a chance, he will try to take you from me."
"Then let him try," Alina whispered, placing her hand over his heart, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm beneath his shirt. "I'm not going anywhere, Damon."
A slow, rare, genuine smile touched the corners of Damon’s mouth—a smile that swept away the ghosts of his past and replaced them with a fierce, burning resolve.

"Good," he said, pulling her into his arms and pressing his lips to her forehead. "Because I'd burn this entire city to ash before I let anyone touch a hair on your head."
Outside, the Vulkoff empire braced for war. But inside the study, wrapped in the arms of the most dangerous man alive, Alina knew her days as a helpless maid were over. She wasn't a victim anymore. She was the queen of the underworld, standing right beside her king.
