Chapter 8 - THE WOLF'S DEN

The main conference room was a fortress of dark wood, bulletproof glass, and tension so thick it could be carved with a knife.

When Alina pushed the heavy double doors open, carrying a silver tray with a crystal decanter of whiskey and two heavy tumblers, the atmosphere was suffocating. Damon sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, flanked by Viktor and two armed enforcers. Across from him sat Yuri Petrov—a slick, silver-haired monster with cold obsidian eyes and a shark-like smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"Ah, the domestic help," Petrov purred in heavily accented English, his eyes sliding over Alina as she approached the table. "Damon, you always did have a taste for pretty little birds. Too bad they make such a mess when you clip their wings."

Damon didn't flinch. His face was carved from glacial ice, his grey eyes locked onto Petrov with a lethal intensity that promised a very violent, very painful death.

"Mind your tongue, Yuri, or I'll feed your tongue to my dogs," Damon said, his voice dangerously low.

Petrov chuckled, leaning back in his chair. "Relax, old friend. I'm not here to start a war today. I'm here to finish an old business deal. You know as well as I do that the shipment from Odessa is mine. Hand it over, and we walk away as gentlemen."

Alina placed the tray down on the corner of the table, her hands steady, though her heart hammered against her ribs. As she poured the whiskey into the crystal glasses, her eyes flickered toward Damon. He caught her gaze for a fraction of a second. There was a silent, unreadable warning in his eyes: Get out.

She turned to leave, but Petrov’s hand suddenly shot out, grabbing her wrist with a bruising grip.

"Wait a second, sweetheart," Petrov leered, his thumb rubbing roughly against the inside of her wrist. "Tell me, how much does Vulkoff pay you to warm his bed? I'll double it. Come work for a man who knows how to treat a—"

CRACK.

Before Petrov could finish his sentence, Damon was out of his chair. The movement was so fast, so blindingly violent, that the heavy oak chair crashed backward onto the floor.

Damon grabbed Petrov by the throat, hoisting the rival boss completely out of his seat and slamming him down onto the conference table with enough force to shatter the crystal decanter. Glass flew everywhere. Viktor and Petrov’s enforcers simultaneously drew their weapons, a dozen gun barrels instantly pointing at each other in a deadly Mexican standoff.

"Touch her again," Damon whispered, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, demonic fury as his fingers tightened around Petrov’s windpipe, "and I will scatter your pieces across three continents before nightfall."
