Chapter 12 - THE FINAL BULLET

Time seemed to grind to an agonizing, absolute halt.
Damon, still locked in brutal hand-to-hand combat with the last enforcer, caught sight of Petrov raising the weapon toward his skull. Their eyes locked across the smoke-filled foyer. In Damon’s grey gaze, there was no fear for himself—only a dark, agonizing fury that he couldn't protect her.
Petrov smirked, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Instinct overrode terror. Alina didn't scream; she moved. Scrambling frantically across the marble floor, her fingers brushed against a heavy, brass-plated decorative mace that had been knocked off a display pedestal during the chaos. She grabbed it with both hands, adrenaline flooding her veins with inhuman strength.
As Petrov shifted his aim downward, preparing to eliminate the distraction before executing Damon, Alina launched herself forward.
With a fierce, primal cry, she swung the heavy brass mace with every ounce of power she possessed, crashing it directly into the side of Petrov’s knee.
A sickening crack echoed through the hall. Petrov shrieked in agony, his leg buckling sideways as he dropped instantly to the floor, his pistol skittering across the marble tiles.
Damon didn't waste a microsecond. With a vicious wrench, he snapped the neck of the enforcer pinning him, lunged across the floor, snatched up Petrov’s dropped weapon, and pressed the cold steel barrel directly between Petrov’s eyes.
The entire foyer went dead silent, save for the crackle of burning drapes and the distant pop of gunfire outside.
Damon’s chest heaved, his face a mask of absolute death. "You should have stayed across the border, Yuri."
"Do it," Petrov choked out, spitting blood onto the marble, his eyes wild with pain and defiance. "Kill me, and my men burn this house to the ash with both of you inside."
"They won't get the chance," Viktor’s voice boomed from the doorway as he and the remaining Vulkoff guards flooded the hall, systematically neutralizing the last of the intruders.

Damon didn't pull the trigger immediately. He looked down at Petrov with icy contempt, then slowly lowered the gun. He reached out with his left hand, pulling Alina up from the floor, hauling her tightly against his bleeding side, shielding her body with his own.
"Viktor. Drag him to the basement," Damon commanded coldly. "Let him live long enough to watch the rest of his empire crumble piece by piece."
