Chapter 11 - THE SIEGE AT DAWN

The fragile peace inside the Vulkoff mansion shattered three nights later with the deafening roar of explosives.

Alina bolted upright in her bed, the walls violently shaking as the heavy iron security gates at the perimeter blew apart. Shouts echoed from the corridors outside, followed immediately by the staccato cracking of automatic gunfire. Petrov hadn't waited for an invitation; he had brought a full-scale private army to burn the empire to the ground.

The door to her room flew open, slamming against the drywall. Damon stood in the frame, his face smeared with soot and blood, a tactical vest strapped over his black shirt, a submachine gun clutched in one massive hand.

"Get up," Damon ordered, his voice cutting through the chaos like a razor. "We're moving. Now."

Alina didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy wool coat, sliding out of bed as a window down the hall shattered inward under a hail of stray bullets. Damon grabbed her hand, his grip crushing, pulling her hard against his side as he fired a controlled burst down the corridor, dropping an infiltrator who had breached the second-floor landing.

"Viktor's holding the lower armory," Damon barked over the deafening din of war. "We have to get to the subterranean escape tunnel before Petrov's men lock down the east wing."

They sprinted through the smoke-filled halls, the ancestral home of the Vulkoffs turning into a war zone of splintered wood and shattered glass. But as they reached the grand staircase, a blinding flash grenade detonated right at the base of the steps.

The shockwave knocked Alina off her feet. She slipped from Damon’s grasp, tumbling halfway down the marble steps before hitting the ground hard, her vision blurring into a haze of white noise and blinding light.

"Alina!" Damon roared.

Before he could reach her, three of Petrov’s heavily armored enforcers burst from the shadows, blocking his path with raised rifles. Damon moved with terrifying, feral speed—his gun flashing, dropping two of them in seconds, but the third tackled him hard against the stone balustrade.

From the floor, Alina blinked through the smoke, her heart seizing. Across the foyer, stepping out of the thickest plume of smoke, came Yuri Petrov himself. A cruel, bloodthirsty grin split his scarred face as he raised a heavy Glock directly toward Damon’s head.

"Checkmate, Vulkoff," Petrov snarled.
