Chapter 7 - The Morning After the StormSunlight was pouring fully through the bedroom window when I woke up. The left side of the bed was empty, the sheets still warm where Lily had been lying only moments before.

I sat up, rubbing my eyes, a stupid, involuntary smile spreading across my face. For the first time in eight years, the weight in my chest was gone. I walked out into the kitchen, expecting to find her making coffee or putting the finishing touches on her gold-leaf painting.
Instead, the apartment was dead silent.
"Lily?" I called out, walking into the living room.
The canvas was gone. Her art supplies were packed neatly into canvas bags by the door. On the kitchen counter, right next to my coffee maker, sat a single piece of torn sketchbook paper with a hurried note written in her messy handwriting:
Ethan,
Noah called. Dad decided to drop by his place early today, and Noah needed me to help him "stage" an alibi for why I wasn't home. See you at Sunday dinner.
— L.
I stared at the note, a sudden wave of unease washing over me. Sunday dinner. With Noah. And our father, who still thought Lily was a hermit and expected her to bring a date.
Before I could even process the logistical nightmare of what Sunday was going to look like, my phone rang. It was Noah.
I swiped to answer, my heart pounding against my ribs. "Hey, man."
"Ethan, you will not believe this," Noah’s voice came through the speaker, frantic and buzzing with energy. "Lily is back home, but she’s acting completely weird. And get this—Dad just called. He’s bringing a surprise guest to Sunday dinner. Some high-rolling art collector he wants Lily to meet. He’s trying to set her up!"
My blood ran cold. "An art collector?"
May you like
"Yeah! Some guy named Julian Vance. Apparently, he's loaded and interested in buying her entire gallery collection upfront. Lily is freaking out, and honestly, I need you at Sunday dinner as backup to keep things from going completely off the rails. You'll be there, right, bro?"
I looked back at the note on the counter, then down the hallway at the queen bed. Sunday dinner was going to be a bloodbath.
