Chapter 10 - The Final Bloodline

I spun around toward the bedroom door, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs.

The apartment door was unlocked.

Standing in the dimly lit hallway, leaning casually against the doorframe with her ebony cane resting on the rug, was the matriarch. She looked older, frailer perhaps without her specialized laboratory equipment, but her eyes burned with the same hypnotic, unyielding fire.

"You should have stayed polite," she said smoothly, taking a slow step into the living room.

Before I could scream, before I could reach for my phone on the floor, the shadow behind her shifted. A tall figure in a dark maintenance uniform stepped out from the hallway, holding a small, silver-tipped vial that shimmered under the kitchen light.

It wasn't an escape. It was a transfer.
