Chapter 20 - The New Matriarch

Before either of us could move, my cell phone on the kitchen counter chimed with a text message from an unknown, encrypted international number.
I looked down at the screen.
“The prison walls were far too fragile, my child. The foundation simply shifted its weight. You carry the bloodline now. Will you keep the throne warm until I return, or must I choose another groom?”
Suddenly, the lights in the kitchen flickered and died, plunging the house into absolute darkness save for the amber glow reflecting from the vial on the counter.

From the dark hallway behind us came the slow, unmistakable sound of wood tapping against the hardwood floor.
