Chapter 4 - The Monitor Crashes

Dr. Hayes spun around and bolted through the doors, followed instantly by two nurses.

Through the large glass window, I watched in absolute horror as my husband’s body arched off the mattress. His back bowed, his fingers clawing desperately at the sheets as a violent seizure wracked his frame. The heart monitor went from a steady, erratic beep to a continuous, piercing high-pitched squeal.

"Code blue! Code blue in Trauma 4!" a nurse screamed from inside.

I slammed my hands against the glass, my breath catching in my throat. "Let me in! Let me in!"

Arthur tried to grab my arm to pull me back, but I spun around and shoved him with every ounce of rage and terror I had built up since morning. He stumbled back against the wall, stunned.

Inside the room, Dr. Hayes slammed his palms against my husband’s chest, delivering frantic chest compressions while a nurse shocked him with the defibrillator paddles. A bright flash illuminated the room.

The old woman stood entirely still outside the window, watching the chaos with her hands neatly folded over the top of her cane. She didn't look panicked. She didn't look surprised. She looked like a scientist watching a lab specimen react to a newly introduced variable.

"Come along," she murmured to Arthur. "He’s weak. He always was the weakest stock we’ve bred in a century."
