Chapter 5 - The Detective’s Arrival

Before Arthur could respond, the heavy glass doors at the end of the hospital wing swung open, and two uniformed police officers rushed in, flanked by a tall detective in a rumpled trench coat.

"Detective Miller, Homicide and Special Investigations," the man announced, flashing a silver badge. He took in the scene instantly: the flatlining monitor, the frantic doctors inside the room, Arthur looking flustered, and the grandmother standing like a statue of absolute authority.

"Stop right there," Detective Miller commanded, locking eyes with the old woman as she attempted to turn toward the exit. "Nobody leaves this floor."

Arthur immediately stepped forward, his corporate charm dialing up to maximum. "Detective, there’s been a misunderstanding. This is a private family medical issue—"

"Mr. Sterling," the detective interrupted, his voice flat and unyielding. "I was just handed a preliminary report from the state lab regarding a glass vial recovered from your family estate this morning. It contains tetrodotoxin mixed with a synthetic paralytic agent. That isn't medicine. That's a weapon."

The silence in the hallway was absolute.

Inside Trauma Room 4, the piercing squeal of the monitor suddenly broke. A ragged, hacking cough echoed through the open door as my husband gasped for air, his chest violently rising and falling as the medical team flooded his lungs with oxygen.

He was alive. But the nightmare was only beginning.
