Chapter 11 - The Second Syringe

The air in the apartment grew suddenly heavy, thick with the scent of bitter almonds and stale copper. I backed away until my spine pressed hard against the kitchen counter, my fingers frantically searching behind me for anything heavy enough to use as a weapon. My hand closed around a ceramic coffee mug, but before I could lift it, the man in the maintenance uniform closed the distance with terrifying speed.

His grip was like a steel vice around my wrist, twisting it sharply until the mug slipped from my fingers and shattered against the hardwood floor.

"Don't fight it, girl," the man rasped, his voice dry like dead leaves. "It only makes the transition harder on your veins."

The matriarch stepped further into the room, leaning on her ebony cane with rhythmic, deliberate taps. She looked at the broken ceramic on the floor, then up at my terrified face, her expression completely devoid of human empathy.

"We offered you a place in the bloodline," she said softly, her voice carrying that hypnotic, chilling weight. "You could have inherited the estates, the trusts, centuries of untouched power. Instead, you chose a boy who couldn't even stand against a single draft."

From down the hallway, a soft rustling sound echoed from our bedroom.

Julian’s voice called out, weak and groggy: "Elena? Who's... who's out there?"
