Chapter 15 - The Red and Blue Flash

Before the needle could pierce his skin, a sharp, deafening crash echoed from outside our apartment window.

Smash!

The glass shattered inward in a shower of glittering shards as a heavy flash-bang grenade landed squarely in the center of the living room floor. A blinding white light erupted, accompanied by a concussive boom that rattled my teeth and shook the walls to their core.

The prison guard screamed, dropping her weapon as smoke filled the room.

"FBI! Federal agents! Nobody move!" a booming voice echoed through the doorway.

Heavy tactical boots swarmed the apartment. Within seconds, the fake maintenance worker was slammed facedown onto the carpet, his arms wrenched behind his back in a pair of steel cuffs. The corrupt guard tried to reach for her sidearm, but a federal agent kicked it across the floor, pinning her against the wall.

The matriarch didn't run. She stood frozen beside Julian’s chair, her hand still holding the glass vial, her eyes darting toward the window where smoke billowed into the night air.

Stepping through the shattered window frame, suspended by a tactical rappelling line from the roof above, was Detective Miller.
