Chapter 2 - The Hospital Room RevelationThe sterile smell of antiseptic filled the emergency room cubicle. Dr. Sterling looked up from the ultrasound monitor, offering a reassuring smile.

"The baby's heartbeat is strong, and the placenta is intact. There’s no sign of internal trauma, but Mrs. Hayes needs strict bed rest for the next week. High stress levels are dangerous right now," Dr. Sterling warned, casting a sharp glance in my direction, assuming I was the source of the stress.
"Thank you, Doctor," I murmured.
When the doctor stepped out, Savannah finally let out a long, shuddering sigh. She pulled the hospital blanket up to her chin and looked at me with haunted, tear-filled eyes.
"You saw the phone, didn't you?" she whispered.
I pulled a chair close to the bed, gripping her cold hand. "Savannah, what is going on? What DNA test? And why was my mother..." I couldn't even finish the sentence. The thought of Bernice laying hands on my pregnant wife made my stomach churn.
Savannah squeezed my hand back, a tear slipping down her cheek. "It started two weeks ago, Chris. Your mother found a document on your home office printer. A private paternity inquiry kit confirmation."
My breath hitched. "A paternity test? I never ordered one."
"I know you didn't," Savannah said, her voice trembling. "Bernice ordered it using your account. She convinced herself—or wanted to convince everyone—that this baby isn't yours. Today, she cornered me. She demanded I sign a confession saying I cheated on you, or she swore she would make sure I 'lost the baby' before you ever found out the truth."

The room seemed to spin. My mother, the woman who raised me, had just attempted to harm my wife and our unborn child over a paranoid delusion.
"She's not just toxic anymore, Chris," Savannah sobbed. "She's dangerous. And she's hiding something much bigger than we realize."
