Chapter 7 - The Final WarningI sat in my car outside the police station, the yellow envelope clutched in my hands. The streetlights flickered against the windshield as a heavy autumn rain began to fall.

I tore open the envelope and unfolded a sheet of lined paper covered in Bernice’s familiar, looping handwriting.

Dear Christopher,

If you're reading this, it means you let that woman ruin everything. You think you've won. You think the police can lock me away and you'll live happily ever after with your little wife and your baby.

You're a fool. Do you really think I didn't plan for this? The trust fund lawyers are already notified of a 'disputed heir.' And as for Savannah... check her phone records, Christopher. Look at who she was texting while you were at work today.

She was never the innocent librarian you thought she was. She knew who you were before you even met. She was planted in your life to take everything from you.

Love, Mom.

A cold shiver raced down my spine. Lies. It had to be lies—a desperate, venomous attempt by a cornered sociopath to destroy my marriage on her way down.

Yet, as I drove back home through the pouring rain, a nagging doubt clawed at the back of my mind. How did Savannah and I meet? It had felt so organic—bumping into each other at a quiet downtown bookstore three years ago.

When I walked through our front door, the house was dark and quiet. Savannah was asleep in our bedroom, the soft rise and fall of her chest visible in the moonlight streaming through the window.

I stood in the doorway, staring at her peaceful face. Then, my eyes drifted to her nightstand. Her phone lay face down.

May you like

Slowly, quietly, I crossed the room. My hand hovered over the device.

Should I look?
