Chapter 16 - The ConfessionWith shaking, calloused fingers, Bernice took the plastic pen handed to her through the secure slot. She scribbled her signature across the legal affidavit, her tears smudging the ink.

As she slid the document back, she looked at me with a hollow, empty expression. "You'll never be happy, Christopher. Blood like ours is cursed. You'll destroy everyone you love."

We left her sitting in the dim cell without looking back.

Dawn was beginning to break over the city skyline, painting the clouds in bruised shades of purple and orange. My phone buzzed incessantly in my pocket—dozens of missed calls and text messages from reporters who had somehow caught wind of the Vance heir reappearing from the dead.

"We have three hours until the board meeting," Arthur said as we climbed back into his armored town car. "Savannah's legal team has already filed a writ of habeas corpus to get her released on medical grounds. If she makes it to that boardroom before you do, she can legally claim power of attorney over your assets due to 'emotional distress' from the arrest."

"Step on it, Uncle Arthur," I said, looking out the tinted window as the city rushed by. "We're ending this today."
