Chapter 9 - Checkmate"So the baby..." I whispered, my voice cracking as the horrifying reality set in. "Is the baby even mine?"

Savannah stopped a few feet away from me, a faint, humorless smile touching her lips. "Oh, relax, Chris. The baby is yours. Biology is a funny thing—sometimes you fall in love with your mark, even when revenge was the original plan. But the trust fund? That requires a married heir with an established household. That’s why I needed you to marry me. That’s why I needed to keep you isolated from Bernice."

"You both used me," I spat, the rage inside me finally superseding the shock. "My whole life has been a tug-of-war between two manipulative monsters!"

"We're not monsters, Chris. We're survivors," Savannah said calmly, reaching out to touch my arm.

I violently jerked away from her touch. "Stay away from me. Stay away from the house, stay away from my money, and stay away from my life."

"You can't do that, Chris," Savannah sighed, her tone shifting from cold to dangerously sweet as she rested a hand protectively over her belly. "We’re tied together now. Forever. And if you try to cut me out, my family's legal team will ensure you lose every single penny of the Vance estate before the ink dries on your inheritance papers."

Before I could answer, flashing red and blue lights painted the bedroom walls.

The front door burst open downstairs. Heavy footsteps echoed up the stairs, followed by Detective Miller's voice ringing through the house:
