CHAPTER 1 – The Dog That Wouldn't Say Goodbye

The old church was so silent that even the sound of people breathing felt too loud.

Rows of police officers stood at attention, their medals shining beneath the stained-glass windows. At the center of the room rested the flag-covered coffin of Officer Daniel Hayes—a decorated K-9 handler who had died during what officials called "a tragic operation."

Everyone believed this was the end.

Everyone... except one soul.

Rex, Daniel's loyal German Shepherd, slowly walked down the aisle without a handler. His ears were low, his tail didn't move, and his eyes never left the coffin.

The crowd expected him to lie quietly beside his partner one last time.

Instead...

Rex suddenly jumped onto the coffin.

Several officers rushed forward, but the police chief lifted a hand.

"Wait."

The dog wasn't barking wildly.

He wasn't panicking.

He was sniffing.

Again.

And again.

Then Rex let out a heartbreaking whine unlike anything anyone had ever heard.

He scratched violently at the wooden lid.

The church fell into complete silence.

"He's trying to tell us something," whispered one detective.

But nobody wanted to believe it.

Because according to every official report...

Officer Daniel Hayes had already been dead for three days.

Yet Rex refused to move.

Not for food.

Not for commands.

Not even for the officers who had raised him since he was a puppy.

His eyes stayed fixed on the coffin, as if his partner was still inside...

Waiting.
