CHAPTER 5 – The Bullet Meant for the Dog
The warehouse exploded into gunfire.
Masked men poured through every entrance, their rifles pointed straight at Daniel.
“Finish him this time!” Captain Cole shouted.
Sarah shoved Daniel behind a stack of crates and returned fire, but they were badly outnumbered.
Rex refused to hide.
The German Shepherd sprinted across the warehouse, weaving between bullets with incredible speed.
One gunman aimed directly at Daniel’s head.
Bang!
Rex leaped through the air.
The bullet struck his shoulder.
The dog crashed to the concrete with a painful cry.
“REX!” Daniel screamed.
For the first time in years, the decorated officer completely lost control.
Ignoring the gunfire, he crawled toward his partner, pressing both hands against the wound.
Blood soaked Rex’s golden fur.
Cole laughed.
“Perfect. Kill the dog first. Then kill the hero.”
But the laughter stopped almost immediately.
Red and blue lights suddenly illuminated every window.
More than thirty police vehicles surrounded the warehouse.
Cole smiled confidently.
“You called backup?”
Daniel slowly looked up.
“No.”
The loudspeaker echoed through the darkness.
“Federal agents! Drop your weapons immediately!”
Captain Cole’s face drained of color.
“How...?”
Sarah suddenly remembered the flash drive.
Daniel had secretly uploaded every piece of evidence to the FBI before disappearing.
The entire operation had been monitored for hours.
