Chapter 5 - The Safe HouseTwo hours later, the storm outside had intensified into a howling gale, but inside the reinforced safe house in upper Manhattan, the environment was secure, silent, and heavily guarded.

Elena sat on the edge of a plush white sofa, nervously wrapping her hands around a steaming mug of tea. Lily was fast asleep in the adjacent bedroom, exhausted from the sheer terror and confusion of the evening.

Dominic stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the glittering, rain-slicked Manhattan skyline. He held a glass of amber whiskey in his hand, swirling the ice cubes without drinking.

"Start talking, Elena," Dominic said quietly, not turning around. "Why did you fake your death? Why didn't you come to me?"

Elena set her mug down on the glass table, her voice trembling. "Five years ago, when we were planning our wedding, my father’s debts caught up with him. He had borrowed millions from the Maroni syndicate. When he tried to walk away, they murdered him in front of me."

Dominic turned slowly, his expression tightening. "I searched for your father's killers for months. Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Vincent Rossi intercepted me the night my father died," Elena whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "He showed me footage of you walking into a trap, and he gave me a choice: either I swallow a fatal dose of paralytic poison while they staged a fake car crash into the river, or they would execute you, your brothers, and every loyal man in your organization."

Dominic crossed the room, kneeling beside her chair, taking her cold hands in his. "You sacrificed yourself so I could live?"

"I had to," she choked out, a sob breaking through her restraint. "And two months later... I discovered I was pregnant with Lily. I knew if Vincent ever found out I had your child, he would use her as leverage to control the Moretti empire forever. So I ran. I hid in Brooklyn under an assumed name, sewing dresses, praying every single day that you would never find us—because finding us meant death."

Dominic’s jaw tightened into a hard line of absolute resolve. "Vincent Rossi is unconscious in our basement holding cells right now. And by sunrise, the Maroni syndicate won't just be broken—they will be erased."
