Chapter 8 - The ConfessionBack in the subterranean holding cells beneath Dominic’s estate, the harsh fluorescent lights hummed above Vincent Rossi, who was chained securely to a heavy steel interrogation chair.

Dominic sat across from him at a metal table, slowly spinning a heavy gold signet ring on his finger.
"Who else knew, Vincent?" Dominic asked. "You didn't orchestrate my fake assassination alone. Who inside my own inner circle helped you stage Elena’s disappearance?"
Vincent spat a glob of blood onto the concrete floor, laughing hoarsely. "You think you're so smart, Moretti? You think you rule the city? Even if I tell you, you're already too late. The Veritas Syndicate has already initiated phase two."
Dominic’s eyes narrowed. The name hit him like a physical blow. Veritas. The shadowy international consortium he thought he had wiped out years ago.
"Give me a name," Dominic demanded, slamming his palm onto the metal table with a force that made the room vibrate.

Vincent grinned maliciously, blood staining his teeth. "Ask your trusted consigliere, Julian. Check his offshore accounts in Zurich. He sold Elena out to us for a seat at our international table."
Dominic stood up slowly. The betrayal cut deeper than a knife. Julian had stood beside his father, had attended his mother’s funeral, and had managed the Moretti family’s legal affairs for thirty years.
