I stood on the balcony of my newly expanded penthouse overlooking Central Park—purchased legally and entirely with my own hard-earned capital—holding a glass of sparkling cider as I watched the autumn leaves drift down through the crisp afternoon air.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. It was an automated notification from the federal prison system—a standard legal alert informing me that inmate David Hayes had officially exhausted his final appeal and was transferred to a maximum-security facility upstate.

I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel pity. I felt nothing at all, which was the ultimate victory.

When David had told me, “Take care of them while I’m gone,” he thought he was trapping me in a cage of domestic servitude while he ran off to live a double life. He never imagined that by leaving the door unlocked, he was giving me the exact opening I needed to burn his entire world to the ground and build an empire of my own upon the ashes.
