Chapter 24 - The Quiet SundayThree days after the Geneva summit, I flew back to New York aboard a private charter, returning not to a chaotic household filled with demanding in-laws and a cheating spouse, but to the absolute, pristine sanctuary of my Tribeca penthouse.

Sunday morning sunlight streamed through the massive glass windows, warming the reclaimed oak floors. I poured myself a fresh cup of artisan coffee, stepped out onto my private balcony, and looked down at the quiet, beautiful bustle of the city below.

My phone rested silently on the kitchen island. No panicked calls from David. No venomous demands from Teresa. No desperate visits from Arthur.

The federal penitentiary system’s automated portal sent a routine, quarterly institutional update: Inmate David Hayes transferred to medium-security labor detail, sentence remaining: seven years.

I archived the notification without reading the details. It no longer mattered. His existence was a footnote in a chapter I had already finished reading.

Maya stepped onto the balcony, holding a fresh tablet. “Eleanor, the preliminary merger talks with the Singapore tech consortium are scheduled for Tuesday morning. Do you want to review the briefs tonight?”

I took a slow sip of my coffee, feeling the warm, steady pulse of my own independence.

“No, Maya,” I smiled, looking out at the endless horizon where the sky met the Manhattan skyline. “Let’s take the evening off. We’ve earned it.”
