Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a SetupThe silence in the grand foyer was so heavy it felt physical, pressing down on the marble floor like a physical weight. On the giant screen, the CCTV footage looped silently—a digital ghost showing Vanessa’s manicured fingers sliding the diamond necklace into Emily’s leather bag.

Vanessa stood frozen, her mouth opening and closing like a fish stranded on a dock. The poise, the elegance, the untouchable aura she had worn like a designer armor just moments ago had completely evaporated.
Daniel didn’t raise his voice. That was what made him terrifying. When CEOs of multi-billion-dollar conglomerates shouted, you ducked. When they whispered like winter wind, empires crumbled.
"Security," Daniel said, his voice cutting through the ambient hum of the central air conditioning.
Two burly men in tailored suits stepped forward instantly. They hadn't been called into the foyer earlier because Vanessa had assumed she wouldn't need muscle; she had the moral high ground, or so she thought.
"Mr. Vance, please—" Vanessa finally found her voice, a shrill, cracking sound that bounced off the high vaulted ceilings. She lunged forward, her manicured hand reaching out to grab Daniel’s sleeve. "It’s a glitch! Technology can be manipulated! You know my family, Daniel! We go back years—my father—"
"Your father embezzled three million dollars from my logistics division in 2018, and I let him resign quietly to save your family name," Daniel interrupted, pulling his arm away as if her touch would stain him. "I don't deal in charity anymore, Vanessa. And I certainly don't tolerate criminals under my roof."
Margaret, the head of household staff and Emily’s direct supervisor—who had looked ready to fire Emily on the spot just five minutes prior—suddenly found the intricate patterns of the Persian rug fascinating. Her face was the color of curdled milk. She had been Vanessa’s co-conspirator in subtle ways for months, turning a blind eye to missing items, whispering poisonous rumors into the upper management's ears about Emily’s "suspicious background."
Emily stood frozen. Her cheek still throbbed from the vicious slap Vanessa had delivered. The stinging pain was a sharp, grounding anchor in a nightmare that felt increasingly surreal. She looked at Daniel, then down at her worn-out sneakers, the stark opposite of the thousand-dollar Louboutins surrounding her.
"Mr. Vance," Emily’s voice was barely a whisper, hoarse from holding back tears. "I... I want to resign. Please. Just let me go home."
"Go home?" Daniel turned his gaze toward her, his expression softening just a fraction—just enough to show he was human, before his eyes hardened back into steel. "Not yet, Emily. We don't reward predators by letting them walk away unscathed. And we certainly don't let innocent people carry the stain of a thief."
Vanessa’s eyes darted frantically around the room. The guests—influencers, socialites, and business partners who had been sipping champagne and nodding sympathetically at Vanessa’s performance—had now backed away, forming a wide, judgmental circle around her. Phones were out. Screens flickered. In the age of viral media, Vanessa knew her life as she knew it was over.
Unless she could turn the narrative.
"You think you're so smart, Daniel?" Vanessa snarled, her mask of innocence shattering completely into vicious malice. Her face twisted into a snarl. "You think you know why I did it? Look at her! Look at this pathetic little nobody cleaning your toilets while wearing your mother’s stolen face!"
Daniel’s eyes narrowed. "Watch your tongue."

"Ask her!" Vanessa pointed a trembling, venomous finger straight at Emily’s chest. "Ask her who her real mother is! Ask her why she applied for a housekeeping job in the very mansion her mother was thrown out of twenty years ago! She’s not just a maid, Daniel. She’s a saboteur!"
Gasps rippled through the crowd again. Emily’s breath hitched. Her face turned chalk white, every drop of blood draining from her skin. The secret she had buried deep in her chest—the secret she thought no one in this house could ever possibly uncover—was suddenly thrown out into the open like garbage on a pristine floor.
