Chapter 6 - The Unseen ShadowThe penthouse office grew suddenly cold as the digital clock on the desk flipped to 3:15 PM.

Emily stared at the screen of her phone, the glowing text message burning into her retina like a brand. The photo attached to it showed the street corner outside the Vance Global building—taken from a high angle, looking directly up at the executive suite windows through a high-powered telephoto lens.

"What is it?" Daniel asked, noticing the sudden loss of color in her face. He stepped closer, peering down at the screen.

When his eyes registered the message, his jaw tightened. The warm, relaxed demeanor he had worn moments ago vanished, replaced once again by the lethal predator who had dismantled Robert Sterling’s career in a single morning.

"They're still out there," Emily whispered, her fingers trembling slightly as she clutched the phone. "I thought... I thought once the Sterlings were exposed, it would be over."

"The Sterlings were just foot soldiers," Daniel said, his voice dangerously low as he walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, scanning the bustling Manhattan crowds below. "My uncle Arthur didn't act alone twenty years ago. He was backed by a silent partner—someone who provided the shell companies, the offshore accounts, and the legal loopholes. Someone whose name was never attached to the public scandals."

Emily walked up beside him, looking down at the microscopic-looking ant-like people moving across the pavement far below. "Who?"

"I don't know yet," Daniel admitted grimly. "But whoever sent that text just made a fatal mistake. They exposed themselves."

Before Emily could reply, the secure intercom on Daniel’s desk buzzed sharply.

“Mr. Vance?” It was the voice of Marcus, head of corporate security. “We have an emergency alert on the basement sub-level. Someone just breached the secondary digital archive containing the pre-2000 physical asset logs.”

Daniel slammed his hand onto the intercom button. "Lock down the entire building! No one enters, no one leaves. Seal the data vaults!"

“Sir... we tried,” Marcus's voice crackled, laced with genuine panic. “The mainframe isn't being hacked from the outside. Someone inside the building just plugged a physical drive into the master terminal.”

Emily’s eyes widened. "Inside the building? But all the guests left, and the staff was cleared out for vetting!"

Daniel didn't answer. He turned on his heel, grabbed his heavy tailored coat off the rack, and sprinted toward the private elevator. "Come on."
