Chapter 5 - The Descent of the SterlingsThe fallout was swift, brutal, and absolute.

By noon, federal agents from the SEC and the financial crimes division walked into the Vance Global boardroom. Robert Sterling was cuffed and led out past rows of stunned employees, his head bowed in absolute disgrace.

Vanessa tried to flee through the executive parking garage, only to find her bank cards declined, her luxury sports car repossessed on the spot by order of the bank, and two Vance security guards waiting to escort her off the premises with a permanent restraining order keeping her two miles away from any Vance property.

Back in the executive suite, the dust was finally beginning to settle.

Emily stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out over the sprawling Manhattan skyline. The sunlight caught the gold pendant of a simple necklace she now wore—not a stolen diamond, but a small silver locket containing a picture of her mother smiling.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor.

"They're gone," Daniel said quietly, stopping a few feet away from her. He loosened his silk tie, looking more relaxed than Emily had ever seen him. "The board voted unanimously to reinstate your mother’s name to the corporate founders' plaque, with full restitution and back pay."

Emily closed her eyes, a heavy, twenty-year-old weight lifting off her chest. A single tear rolled down her cheek, but this time, it wasn't a tear of pain or humiliation. It was peace.

"Thank you, Daniel," she whispered, turning to face him. "For believing me. Even when you had every reason not to."

Daniel stepped closer, his gaze softening as he looked down at her. The billionaire CEO and the former housekeeper—two worlds that should never have collided, bound together by a shared quest for truth.

"I didn't believe you because of blind faith, Emily," Daniel said softly, a faint smile touching his lips. "I believed you because the truth has a way of fighting back, no matter how deep you bury it."

He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing against the exact spot on her cheek where Vanessa had struck her days ago. The skin was healed, but the memory remained.

"And by the way," Daniel murmured, his voice dropping an intimate octave. "You make a terrible housekeeper. But an exceptional compliance officer."

Emily let out a small, genuine laugh, the first one in years. "Good thing I got promoted, then."

Just as the tension between them shifted into something warm and electric, Emily’s phone buzzed aggressively on the executive desk.

She glanced down at the screen. It was an unknown number, displaying a single, chilling text message accompanied by a fresh photo taken from across the street.

“You think you won? The Sterling family was just the distraction. Game on, little maid.”

Emily’s blood ran cold. She slowly lifted her head to look at Daniel, realizing with a jolt of pure terror that the war was far from over.
