Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Sub-BasementThe private elevator plunged down into the bowels of the skyscraper, bypassing the standard parking garages and descending deep into the bedrock of Manhattan, where the original Vance family vault had been built in the 1950s.

The air down here smelled of ozone, damp concrete, and old paper.

When the elevator doors slid open with a sharp metallic ding, the emergency red strobe lights were flashing rhythmically, casting an eerie, bloody glow down the long, industrial corridor.

"Stay behind me," Daniel ordered, pulling a small, heavy keycard from his pocket and swiping it against the biometric security panel of the main archive door.

The heavy steel door hissed open, releasing a cloud of chilled air.

Inside, rows of towering metal shelving units stretched into the dimness. At the far end of the room, illuminated by the blue glow of a terminal screen, stood a figure dressed in a dark tactical hoodie, furiously typing on the master keyboard.

"Stop right there!" Daniel’s voice echoed like a thunderclap down the concrete aisle.

The figure froze. Slowly, methodically, the hooded person turned around.

The hood dropped back, revealing a face that made Emily gasp and clutch her chest in utter disbelief.

It wasn't Vanessa. It wasn't one of the disgraced board members.

It was Margaret.

The head of housekeeping—the sweet, grandmotherly woman who had spent the last ten years serving tea, managing staff, and nodding sympathetically while Emily scrubbed floors.

"Margaret?" Emily breathed out, her voice cracking with betrayal. "You? But... why?"

Margaret didn't look remorseful. In fact, her face twisted into a cold, calculating smirk that looked entirely alien on her usually gentle features. She held a small, glowing USB flash drive between her thumb and forefinger.

"You really thought Arthur Vance was the mastermind, Daniel?" Margaret chuckled, a dry, raspy sound. "Arthur was a greedy idiot. He thought he was running the show, while I was the one who set up every single offshore account, forged every document, and orchestrated the fall of Elena Vance twenty years ago."

Daniel took a slow, calculated step forward, his eyes locked onto Margaret like a hawk watching a mouse. "You're the silent partner. You've been inside this company longer than any of us."

"Long enough to know where all the bodies are buried," Margaret snapped back, her eyes flashing with malice. "And long enough to know that your little compliance officer was going to dig up dirt that leads right back to my Swiss bank accounts. I planted the necklace on Vanessa to frame Emily and get her fired before she could look at these files. But the arrogant little brat failed."

Margaret’s hand hovered ominously over a large red panic button mounted on the side of the terminal desk.

"And now," Margaret smiled, pressing the flash drive deeper into her pocket, "this building goes dark."
