Chapter 8 - The Ultimatum"Don't even think about it, Margaret," Daniel warned, his muscles tensed like a coiled spring, ready to lunge across the five feet separating them.

"Oh, I'm not going to press the panic button, Mr. Vance," Margaret purred, her eyes darting toward the overhead ventilation grate. "I'm going to press this."
With a swift, violent motion, Margaret slammed her palm down onto a secondary keypad embedded in the desk.
CLANG!
Heavy steel fire shutters dropped instantly over the doorway behind Daniel and Emily, sealing them inside the archival vault with a deafening crash. Sparks flew from the overhead conduits as the entire sub-level's power grid short-circuited, plunging them into absolute darkness, broken only by the pulsing crimson emergency strobe lights.
"Margaret! Open this door!" Daniel shouted, slamming his fist against the impenetrable steel shutter.
From the other side, muffled through the thick metal, Margaret’s voice echoed mockingly.
"Goodbye, Mr. Vance. Enjoy the history you're so desperate to uncover. The ventilation system has been programmed to pump in halon gas. You have exactly ten minutes before you fall asleep forever."
The sound of receding footsteps faded away down the concrete corridor.
Emily’s heart hammered frantically against her ribs. The air in the sealed vault already felt thinner, heavier. She spun around, frantically scanning the towering shelves of physical records. "We need to find an emergency release! There has to be a manual override for the vault!"
Daniel didn't panic. Panic was a luxury he didn't indulge in. He pulled out his high-powered smartphone, casting a bright beam of LED light across the walls.
"There's no manual override from the inside," Daniel said calmly, examining the reinforced hinges. "This vault was built during the Cold War. It's designed to withstand a direct blast."
"We're going to die in here?" Emily’s voice trembled, not with fear for herself, but with the bitter agony of coming so close to total victory, only to be snuffed out in the dark. "My mother... her name won't be cleared. Margaret wins."
"Margaret doesn't win anything," Daniel said firmly, stepping right up to Emily and grabbing her by the shoulders. His dark eyes caught the pulsing red light, fierce and unyielding. "Look at me, Emily. We are not dying here."
"How? The door is sealed, the air is running out, and we're thirty floors underground!"
"Because," Daniel said, a grim, confident smile crossing his lips, "when I took over this company, I realized the old blueprints had a flaw. Arthur Vance was paranoid. He built a private escape tunnel connecting this exact sub-vault to the Manhattan subway drainage system—a backdoor he used to move cash without the board knowing."

Emily’s eyes widened with a flicker of desperate hope. "Where is it?"
Daniel shined his phone light toward the back corner of the vault, behind a massive shelving unit filled with moldering ledgers from 1980. "Right behind the shelf of shipping manifests. Help me move it!"
