Chapter 17 - SECRETS IN THE VAULTThree weeks passed with blissful, deceptive quiet.

The Triad seemed to have retreated, Master Chen had gone entirely silent on the international shipping lanes, and life in the Tribeca penthouse settled into a bizarre, high-security domestic routine. Noah was acing his second-grade classes, Chloe was learning how to count to ten in Italian thanks to Marco, and Izzy had temporarily set up a permanent tech lab in our guest suite.
However, peace in the Kane household never lasted long.
It started late on a Tuesday evening. Adrian was downstairs in the basement armory reviewing security protocols with his enforcers, and Izzy was fast asleep after a 36-hour coding binge.
I was sitting at Adrian’s grand mahogany desk, finishing up a routine audit of the corporate archives, when my elbow accidentally bumped against a hidden brass panel on the side of the desk pedestal.
Click.
A secret compartment popped open smoothly, revealing a single, heavy leather-bound journal and an old, encrypted silver flash drive that wasn't listed on any digital inventory.
Frowning, I reached inside and pulled out the journal.
The first page was handwritten in Adrian’s sharp, precise cursive. But the date on the entry was from five years ago—long before I had even started working at Kane Enterprises as his secretary.
Curiosity getting the better of me, I opened the pages and began to read.
“June 14th. Today, the board tried to force me into an arranged marriage with the daughter of the Sicilian syndicate to secure the transatlantic ports. I refused. I don't care about their alliances. I will build my empire on my own terms, or I will let it burn. But today, a resume crossed my desk from a bright, fiercely stubborn young woman named Elena Vance who applied for the junior administrative assistant position. She has no idea what she’s walking into. But looking at her photograph... I have a feeling my life is about to get a lot more complicated.”
My breath hitched.
I stared at the page, my eyes scanning the words over and over again.
Adrian hadn't just hired me at random. He had seen my resume five years ago—long before we officially met—and had deliberately kept track of me.
Before my mind could process the implications, the screen of the encrypted silver flash drive began to blink with a soft green light, connecting automatically to the desk terminal. A single digital file popped up on the monitor, titled simply: ELENA.
With trembling fingers, I clicked open the file.
Inside was a digital scrapbook containing hundreds of candid photographs of me—walking out of my Brooklyn apartment, drinking coffee at my favorite local diner, laughing with my college roommate, and sitting at my very first desk on my very first day at Kane Enterprises.
Every single photo was dated, organized, and cataloged with meticulous precision.

My heart hammered against my ribs. My mafia boss husband hadn't just fallen in love with me because his son played matchmaker in a hallway.
He had been watching me for five years.
