Chapter 18 - THE CONFRONTATIONThe office door clicked open.

Footsteps echoed softly across the hardwood floor, followed by the familiar, intoxicating scent of cedarwood and faint gunpowder.
“Elena?” Adrian’s deep voice called out gently. “Why are you still awake? It’s past midnight.”
He walked around the edge of the mahogany desk, stopping short when he saw the open brass compartment, the leather journal in my trembling hands, and the digital screen displaying years of hidden photographs.
Adrian stopped dead in his tracks. The color drained from his sharp, handsome face.
For the first time since I had known him, the untouchable, calculating mafia kingpin looked entirely busted.
I slowly stood up from the desk, holding the journal tightly against my chest. My mind was racing, a chaotic mix of shock, disbelief, and a strange, overwhelming warmth.
“Five years, Adrian?” My voice was barely a whisper, trembling slightly. “You’ve been keeping tabs on me for five years? Before I even walked into your office for an interview?”
Adrian didn't look away. His gray-blue eyes searched my face, reading every micro-expression with intense, agonizing focus. He didn't try to lie, and he didn't try to deny it.
“Yes,” Adrian admitted quietly, his voice dropping into a low, husky register.
“Why?” I demanded, taking a step closer, my chest tightening. “Was I part of some leverage? A corporate asset? A contingency plan against your rivals?”
“No!” Adrian snapped, stepping forward so fast the distance between us vanished instantly. His large hands gently reached out, gripping my shoulders with a fierce, desperate urgency. “Never that. From the very first moment I saw your resume—before I even met you—you were the only real thing in a world built on blood, lies, and power.”
He looked down at the digital photos on the screen, a rare, raw vulnerability breaking through his cold exterior.
“I was surrounded by enemies, betrayals, and killers,” Adrian continued, his voice thick with emotion. “I watched your resume cross my desk, and when I looked into your background, I saw a woman who worked two jobs, put herself through college, and refused to let the world break her. I wanted to hire you instantly. But I knew if I brought you into my world too soon, my enemies would target you. So I waited. I watched from a distance, making sure you were safe, until the day you walked into my office for the interview.”
Tears welled up in my eyes, blurring the edges of the room.
“You stalked me,” I laughed breathlessly, a tear spilling over my cheek.
“I protected my future,” Adrian corrected softly, his thumb gently reaching up to wipe away the tear on my cheek. His gaze was burning with an intensity that stole the air right out of my lungs. “And when Noah told me in the hallway that you should be his mommy... I knew it was the universe finally giving me what I had been waiting five years for.”
I looked up at him—at the man who could silence hardened criminals with a single glance, the terrifying head of the Kane crime family, who had kept tabs on me like a lovesick ghost for half a decade.
All the fear, all the shock, melted away, replaced by an overwhelming, surging wave of love.

“You are completely insane, Adrian Kane,” I whispered, sliding my arms around his neck.
“Only for you,” he murmured huskily, just before his lips crashed down onto mine in a fierce, passionate, soul-consuming kiss.
