Chapter 20 - HAPPILY EVER AFTER (FOR NOW)Three months later, the New York underworld had a new, unbreakable rule: Never, under any circumstances, mess with the Kane family, and never underestimate the boss’s secretary.

The Tribeca penthouse had finally returned to its chaotic, beautiful normal.
It was a crisp Sunday morning. Sunlight poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the sprawling living room where Noah and Chloe were building an epic fortress out of couch cushions and building blocks.
I was sitting at the grand mahogany desk, reviewing the final quarterly ledger, when a pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and a familiar chin rested gently on my shoulder.
“Are you still working, Mrs. Kane?” Adrian murmured softly against my neck, sending a delicious shiver down my spine.
“I am managing your impossible empire, Mr. Kane,” I teased, leaning back into his embrace and turning my head to kiss his cheek. “Someone has to make sure we don't go bankrupt buying nerf guns and designer stiletto heels.”
Adrian chuckled, a deep, rich sound that made my heart flutter just as much as it did the first time I heard it in that echoing hallway two years ago.
He reached around, gently closing my laptop screen and turning me around in my chair so I was facing him. His gray-blue eyes, usually sharp and guarded when dealing with the dangerous world outside, were completely soft, filled with a deep, endless devotion.
“Forget the ledger,” Adrian whispered, taking my hands in his. “Today is family day. No spreadsheets, no syndicates, no assassins.”
“Promise?” I smiled, raising an eyebrow.
“I promise,” Adrian smiled back, leaning down to capture my lips in a tender, lingering kiss.
Across the room, Noah looked up from his cushion fort, rolled his eyes dramatically, and announced loudly:
“Dad! Stop kissing Mom! It’s gross!”
Adrian and I pulled apart, laughing softly against each other.
“Some things,” Adrian whispered against my lips, “will never change.”

And as I looked at my fierce, terrifying, deeply devoted mafia husband and our crazy, beautiful family, I knew I wouldn't have it any other way.
THE END.
