Chapter 7 - FALLING APARTThe fight was over almost as quickly as it had begun.

Adrian stood over Victor Morosco’s unconscious, bleeding form, breathing heavily, his knuckles bruised and stained with blood. His security detail swarmed the elevator, swiftly subduing Victor's two remaining thugs and dragging them away into the service corridors.

The office fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Isabella Kane brushed off her designer pantsuit, adjusted her pearl necklace with absolute serenity, and turned her sharp, critical gaze directly toward me.

For a terrifying moment, I thought the matriarch was going to chew me out for ruining her kidnapping or stepping on her moment of glory.

Instead, Isabella walked over, looked me up and down, and gave a slow, approving nod.

“Good form with the stiletto, my dear,” Isabella said coolly. “My son has terrible taste in women, but it appears he finally stumbled upon someone with actual backbone.”

Before I could pick my jaw up off the floor, Adrian strode over. He didn't care about his mother's comments, he didn't care about the blood on his hands—he grabbed me by the shoulders, pulled me violently against his chest, and buried his face in my neck.

“You idiot,” Adrian muttered, his voice trembling slightly against my skin. “You absolute, reckless idiot. What were you thinking walking toward him like that?”

“I was thinking,” I gasped, my hands resting tentatively against his broad chest, feeling the frantic thunder of his heartbeat, “that someone needed to distract him so your mother could do her judo move.”

Adrian pulled back, his gray-blue eyes burning with an intensity that made my knees weak. Without a word of warning, he cupped the back of my head, leaned down, and kissed me.

It wasn't a tentative, hesitant kiss. It was fierce, possessive, desperate, and filled with all the unspoken tension of two years of suppressed longing. The entire office seemed to vanish—his mother, the blood on the floor, the broken glass, the shattered doors. There was only the heat of his lips, the scent of cedar and danger, and the overwhelming realization that I had fallen completely, irrevocably in love with my mafia boss.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, we were both breathless.

“Well,” Isabella cleared her throat loudly, a smug little smile playing on her lips. “It’s about time. Noah has been asking me for a new mother for three weeks, and frankly, your administrative skills were wasted on spreadsheets anyway.”

I flushed a brilliant, burning crimson, burying my face in Adrian’s shirt.

Adrian chuckled, wrapping his arms securely around my waist. “Pack your desk, Elena. You’re coming home with me tonight. Permanently.”
