Chapter 7 - The Unbroken FoundationEvelyn stared at the deed in her hands, the heavy parchment feeling warm against her fingertips. For years, men had tried to define her, shape her, or bargain with her future. Grant had tried to trade her inheritance to save his own skin. Society had tried to make her feel small because she didn't fit into their narrow, fragile molds.

And here stood Roman DeLuca—a man the city whispered about in fear—handing back her legacy without asking for a single thing in return.

"Why?" Evelyn asked softly, her voice barely a breath. "Why do this for me, Roman?"

Roman reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing against her hand as he took the folder and placed it back on the desk. He didn't step back. Instead, he closed the distance between them, his gaze searching her face with an intensity that made the air in the room feel charged.

"Because you are the only person in Boston who ever looked at me and saw a man instead of a headline," Roman answered, his voice dropping an octave. "And because from the first moment I watched you stand your ground against those corrupt politicians, I knew you were the strongest person in this city."

Evelyn felt a shiver run down her spine. She looked up into his dark, fierce eyes and realized something profound: she didn't need to shrink herself for Roman. He didn't want a fragile porcelain doll. He wanted a partner who could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him in the storm.

"And if I tell you I'm not looking to be rescued?" Evelyn challenged, a faint, confident smile playing on her lips.

A slow, dangerous smile curved Roman’s mouth. "I wouldn't dream of rescuing you, Evelyn. I brought you here so you could watch me burn your enemies to the ground while you held the match."

Evelyn let out a low laugh, the last remnants of her past life completely dissolving away. She reached up, her fingers resting lightly against the lapel of his charcoal shirt.

"In that case," Evelyn murmured, "we have some unfinished business to attend to."

"Name it," Roman said.

"Grant’s mother, Lorraine, is hosting a charity gala at the Museum of Fine Arts tomorrow night," Evelyn said, her eyes flashing with sharp, brilliant determination. "She told everyone at the engagement party that my presence would humiliate her family. I think it’s only fair we RSVP."

Roman’s smile widened into something fiercely approving. "Consider our tickets booked."
