Chapter 9 - The Final AuditTwo weeks after the gala, the storm had settled into a new reality for Boston’s high society.

Whitmore Chase Investments had officially filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Federal investigators had seized Grant’s offshore accounts, uncovering a sprawling web of illegal gambling syndicates, securities fraud, and forged signatures. Grant himself had fled the country, reportedly hiding out in a modest apartment in South America, desperately trying to escape the federal indictments closing in around him.

Lorraine Whitmore had sold their historic Back Bay estate at a devastating loss just to cover immediate legal fees, retreating into quiet obscurity.

And Evelyn Carter? Her design firm had just landed the largest commercial contract in its history—designing the interior architecture for the brand-new luxury waterfront complex developed by Roman DeLuca’s corporate holdings.

Seated behind her newly expanded downtown studio desk, Evelyn reviewed the final architectural blueprints for the Seaport project. The sun streamed through large industrial windows, casting warm golden light across her workspace.

The door to her private office opened without a knock.

Roman walked in, holding a steaming cup of black coffee. He set it down gently on the corner of her desk, leaning his hip against the wood as he looked over her shoulder at the blueprints.

"Your layout for the main lobby is exceptional," Roman noted, his voice smooth and approving.

"It better be," Evelyn replied with a smirk, spinning her chair around to face him. "Your development team has been breathing down my neck for three weeks."

"Only because they know you're the best architect in the city," Roman said. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box, placing it quietly on top of the blueprints.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow, looking from the box up to his dark, intense eyes. "What's this?"

"Open it," Roman said simply.

Evelyn lifted the lid. Inside lay no diamond ring, no fragile platinum band meant to bind her to a predetermined script. Instead, resting on the dark velvet was a heavy, custom-forged antique skeleton key—the master key to the penthouse suite of the North End safehouse overlooking Boston Harbor.

"You already gave me the deed to my grandfather's brownstone," Evelyn reminded him softly, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"The brownstone is your legacy," Roman said, leaning down until his gaze was level with hers, his voice dropping into a fierce, quiet intensity. "This key is an invitation. No conditions. No contracts. No expectations other than walking through that door whenever you're ready."

Evelyn looked at the key, then up at the man who had torn down a corrupt empire just to ensure she never had to shrink herself again.

She closed the velvet box, picked up the key, and smiled.

"I'll bring my own luggage," Evelyn said.
