Dominic sat across from me, his laptop closed, watching me with that familiar, intense gaze that had once terrified me and now felt entirely like home.
“You know,” Dominic said, breaking the quiet hum of the jet engines, “out of all the things I expected when I took that bullet in the shoulder six months ago, an emergency room nurse taking over my household and my life was not on the list.”

He reached across the aisle, his warm, strong hand closing over mine, sliding his fingers seamlessly between mine with absolute, unbreakable certainty.
“Call me Dominic,” he said softly.

I squeezed his hand back, looking out the reinforced window as the brilliant blue expanse of the Mediterranean sea stretched endlessly beneath us, bright and clear and completely free of shadows.
“Call me your doctor,” I whispered with a confident smirk. “And we have a deal.”
