Chapter 37 - Midnight at the Lighthouse

The Palermo lighthouse stood on a jagged precipice of rock overlooking the pitch-black Mediterranean Sea, its antique beacon sweeping long, rhythmic beams of white light across the churning waves.
I sat inside the parked Alfa Romeo half a mile down the winding coastal road, monitoring the encrypted audio feed through a tactical earpiece. Dominic and Salvatore had already infiltrated the base of the lighthouse, positioning themselves in the shadows before Reinhardt’s team arrived.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. This wasn't an emergency room with sterile lights and heart monitors. This was international espionage, and one wrong move would bring the full weight of European intelligence down upon our heads.
Through the surveillance drone hovering above the lighthouse, I watched as a sleek black sedan pulled up to the stone structure. Director Klaus Reinhardt stepped out, flanked by two armed operatives in tactical gear.
He walked into the open-air base of the lighthouse, holding a secure satellite phone to his ear.
“Mr. Rossi,” Reinhardt called out into the echoing stone chamber, his voice carrying clearly over the audio feed. “I trust you brought the titanium chip.”
From the shadows behind the spiral staircase, Dominic stepped out into the moonlight. His posture was completely relaxed, his hands shoved casually into the pockets of his dark wool coat, his Sig Sauer hidden securely within reach.
“I brought something better, Reinhardt,” Dominic said, his voice echoing coldly off the damp stone walls. “I brought your entire career.”
Reinhardt’s expression hardened instantly. He signaled his operatives, who immediately raised their assault rifles. “You fool. You think you can outsmart German intelligence with a local Italian mob game?”
“I don't play mob games anymore,” Dominic replied smoothly. “I run a legitimate global enterprise. And your syndicate is about to get audited.”

From behind Reinhardt, Salvatore stepped out of the shadows, slamming the heavy iron exit door shut and locking it from the inside, trapping the German operatives inside the structure.
Simultaneously, I tapped the broadcast command on my laptop dashboard, routing the live audio and video stream of Reinhardt’s incriminating dialogue directly to every major financial regulatory agency and investigative journalism desk across Europe.
