The flight back to Sicily was quiet, the heavy hum of the private jet carrying us through the starlit night. Moreau had signed unconditional surrender documents before we left Ajaccio, formally ceding all Corsican operations in the southern Mediterranean to the Rossi syndicate.

“You weren't just an ER nurse, Nora,” he murmured, kissing the top of my head. “You were the only person in the world brave enough—or crazy enough—to tell me no when I was bleeding to death.”

“Somebody had to,” I smiled, resting my head against his shoulder. “Your rent was paid, but my medical standards required a complete psychological evaluation of the patient.”

“And what’s your final diagnosis, Doctor?” he whispered, his lips brushing against my ear.

“Incurable,” I murmured, turning to kiss him deeply. “Completely, permanently incurable.”
