Chapter 1 - THE DISCOVERY

The silence in the master bedroom was suffocating. Arthur stared at the open velvet jewelry box on the vanity, his chest tightening. The vintage diamond tennis bracelet—a priceless heirloom that had belonged to his late wife, meant solely for Lily when she turned eighteen—was gone.

Victoria was downstairs, her laughter ringing out clear and melodic as she chatted with the evening caterers on the patio. Arthur’s mind raced. He had trusted her completely. He had given her a key to his heart, his home, and his legacy. But the empty space in the velvet box screamed a different reality.

"Arthur, darling?" Victoria’s voice floated from the doorway. She walked in, her silk robe draped loosely over her shoulders, a faint smile playing on her lips. Her eyes flicked from Arthur’s face to the open box on the vanity. The smile didn't reach her eyes; instead, it froze into a calculated mask.

"Victoria," Arthur said, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth. "Where is the bracelet?"

"What bracelet, sweetie?" she asked, feigning innocence with practiced ease, stepping closer. "You know I have so many pieces..."

"Don't play games with me," Arthur snapped, turning to face her, his eyes burning with fury. "The heirloom. The one meant for Lily. It’s missing. And the security logs show the safe hasn't been opened by me in weeks. But your fingerprint accessed it yesterday."

The air in the room grew heavy. Victoria stopped. The innocent facade melted away instantly, replaced by a cold, calculating glare that Arthur had never seen before. She didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, mocking smirk spread across her lips.

"You really are a fool, aren't you, Arthur?" Victoria whispered, her voice like ice. "You built an empire of numbers, but you couldn't read a real person to save your life."
