Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the WallThe silence in the nursery was absolute, save for the rhythmic, terrified gasps of my eight-month-old triplets out in the hallway.

Marco, my security chief, froze with his hand buried deep inside the ventilation shaft. His knuckles were bone-white. The tactical flashlight in his left hand shook, casting erratic, dancing shadows across the nursery wallpaper.

“Marco. What is it?” I demanded, my voice dropping into the dangerous, flat register that usually made grown men beg for mercy. Right now, it felt entirely useless.

“Boss...” Marco swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. “It’s a localized relay. High-end military grade. It’s... it’s not transmitting outward. It’s a closed-loop audio processor tuned to a specific ultrasonic frequency.”

Sophie clutched her ugly button-eyed doll tighter, burying her face into my tailored suit trousers.

“A frequency?” I stepped closer, ignoring the instinct telling me to back away. “What kind of frequency?”

“The kind that human adults can’t hear, Mr. Moretti,” a cold, synthesized voice echoed from the dark hallway.

We all whipped around.

Dr. Gable stood frozen in the doorway, his medical bag slipping from his fingers to hit the plush carpet with a dull thud. But it wasn't the doctor who had spoken. It was the smart-home touchscreen panel mounted on the nursery wall. The sleek black glass, which should have displayed the climate control settings, flickered violently.

The screen shifted from blue to a stark, blinding crimson.

A digital wave pulsed across the glass, matching the exact rhythm of my children's distant cries.

“Welcome home, Adrien,” the speaker system hissed, the audio distorted by a deliberate, mocking static. “You spent a decade building walls of steel, buying guards, and burying enemies. Did you really think you could keep your bloodline safe in a glass cage of your own design?”

Marco drew his weapon, sweeping the barrel toward the panel. “System override! I’m locking down the entire estate's mainframe!”

“Don’t bother, Marco,” I whispered, my eyes locked on the blinking red lights deep within the vent. A terrifying realization was beginning to form in the dark corners of my mind. This wasn't an outside breach. This system was hardwired into the foundational architecture of the mansion.

Someone hadn't broken into my house.

They had built the house.
