Chapter 11 - The Secret in the Button EyesThe federal vans had long since cleared the gates, their red and blue sirens fading into the dull roar of the Pacific highway. The estate was quiet again—an eerie, heavy quiet that usually followed a storm.

I stood in the center of the nursery, the morning light cutting long, golden slants across the hardwood floor. Theo, Miles, and Nora were still fast asleep, their breathing synchronized and peaceful.

Yet, my mind wasn't on the dismantled Vanguard network, nor on Alistair Vance locked away in a federal black site.

It was on Sophie.

Before Elena had been led away in handcuffs, she had looked at her daughter not with love, but with a terrifying, hollow dread—as if she were afraid of what the four-year-old actually was. And more importantly, how did a child who supposedly lived a sheltered life in my servants' quarters know the exact layout of a 19th-century decommissioned cistern?

I walked over to the armchair where Sophie had left her belongings before the chaos began.

Resting on the velvet cushion was her ugly, handmade doll with the mismatched button eyes.

I picked it up. It felt strangely heavy for a child’s toy. The fabric was coarse, stitched together with rough, industrial-grade nylon thread—the exact same thread used in Vanguard tactical gear.

With a cautious hand, I traced my fingers along the seam of the doll’s back. My thumb caught on a small, hidden zipper concealed beneath a fold of synthetic burlap.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I pulled it down.

Instead of cotton stuffing, a tiny, micro-sd card rolled out into my palm, alongside a cold, metallic thumb drive stamped with the Vanguard insignia: PROJECT CHRYSALIS - SUBJECT 001.
