Chapter 13 - The Descent of Marcus VanceBy Thursday morning, Vanguard Capital officially withdrew its acquisition bid, citing ‘unforeseen strategic real estate shifts.’

Marcus Vance, realizing he had been completely abandoned by his financial backers, marched uninvited into the Northstar lobby, demanding an audience with the CEO. Security tried to intercept him, but I waved them off through the glass partition of my 72nd-floor office.

“Send him up,” I instructed my secretary.

When Marcus burst through my office doors, he looked like a man unraveling at the seams. His tie was crooked, his face flushed with rage, and his hands trembled as he slammed his briefcase onto my mahogany desk.

“What kind of backroom extortion are you playing, Camille?” Marcus snarled, leaning over my desk. “You think you can destroy my family just because my nephew was a fool to you?”

I didn't flinch. I slowly closed my laptop, leaned back in my ergonomic leather chair, and locked eyes with him.

“Your nephew wasn't just a fool, Marcus. He was a symptom of a family that believed women were decorative fixtures meant to be silenced and erased,” I said softly. “And as for extortion? I call it a structural correction.”

“You’re ruthless,” he hissed.

“No,” I replied, standing up to tower over him despite the height difference. “I’m just finally using the voice your family spent a decade trying to mute. Now, walk out of my building before I have security throw you out into the street where your legacy belongs.”

Marcus opened his mouth to retort, but the sheer, crushing weight of my gaze stopped him dead in his tracks. He grabbed his briefcase, turned on his heel, and stormed out of the office, defeated by the very ghost he had ignored for years.
