Chapter 19 - The Whisper in the WindA year after the divorce, a small, unassuming envelope arrived at my office.

It had no return address. Just my name, written in a shaky, familiar handwriting I hadn't seen in years.

I opened it with a letter opener. Inside was a single piece of lined paper.

Camille, I saw you on the cover of Forbes yesterday. You looked magnificent. I finally lost my job at the cubicle—they said I wasn't 'adaptive' enough to the new corporate standards. I’m living in a small studio apartment across town now. I walk past Northstar Dominion every single day, and every time I look up at those windows, I remember the night I stood silent while another woman took your name. I deserved every single thing that happened to me. I hope, somewhere out there, you can forgive the fool who never knew what he had. — Adrian.

I stared at the letter for a long, quiet moment.

There was no anger left in my chest. No bitterness. Just the quiet, hollow echo of a man who had traded a queen for a reflection, and spent the rest of his life staring at the empty throne.

I didn't reply. I didn't call him. I didn't even keep the letter.

I dropped the paper straight into the shredder beside my desk. The machine hummed for two seconds, reducing his apology to fine, meaningless dust.
