Chapter 4 - The Midnight AuditBy nightfall, the Whitaker estate looked less like a home recovering from a high-society scandal and more like a federal crime scene.

Black vans belonging to Whitaker Enterprises' internal security and forensic auditing teams lined the half-mile driveway. Men in dark suits carried boxes of seized documents, hard drives, and discarded personal belongings out of the East Wing—Vanessa’s former domain.
Inside the grand master study, the oak-paneled walls echoed with the frantic clicking of laptop keys.
Evan sat behind his massive mahogany desk, a cold cup of black coffee untouched at his elbow. On the screen before him were financial statements, wire transfers, and text logs pulled from Vanessa’s personal laptop—logs that had been automatically mirrored to his private server the moment he triggered the lockdown protocol.
The door clicked open, and Marcus Vance, Evan’s lifelong legal counsel and closest confidant, stepped inside. Marcus looked tired, his silk tie loosened, carrying a thick manila folder stamped with red confidential seals.
"It’s worse than we thought, Evan," Marcus said, dropping the folder onto the desk.
Evan didn't look up from his screen. "Define worse."
"It wasn't just psychological abuse toward the children," Marcus said grimly, leaning against the edge of the desk. "Vanessa wasn't just planning a wedding. She was executing a long-term asset-stripping operation. Over the last eight months, she systematically moved nearly four million dollars from the children's trust accounts—accounts you gave her limited proxy over for educational expenses—into offshore shell companies registered in the Caymans."
Evan’s fingers stopped moving across the keyboard.
The room temperature seemed to drop ten degrees.
"She touched the kids' trust?" Evan whispered, his voice dangerously low.
"That's not all," Marcus continued, flipping open the folder. "She also had a private investigator on retainer, digging into your corporate holdings, trying to find structural vulnerabilities to exploit in a pre-nup contest or a post-divorce settlement. She was preparing to blindside you the day after the wedding."
Evan leaned back in his leather chair, staring up at the vaulted ceiling. The ghost of the fake beard still felt like it was prickling his skin. For months, he had been traveling the globe, trusting her sweet smiles, her philanthropic galas, and her public devotion to his motherless children, believing she was bringing stability back to their broken home.
Instead, she had been a predator operating inside the perimeter.
"Marcus," Evan said, his voice deadpan and chillingly calm.
"Yes?"
"I don't want her sued. I don't want her settled with a quiet NDA and a severance check." Evan leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk, his gray eyes locking onto his lawyer's. "I want every single wire transfer traced, frozen, and seized before sunrise. I want her financial accounts locked, her credit cards blacklisted, and her name dragged through every civil and criminal court jurisdiction from here to London."

Marcus stared at him for a second, then nodded slowly. "Consider it done. What about the press?"
"Let them talk," Evan replied, a dangerous smirk touching the corner of his mouth. "Let the world see exactly what happens when someone mistakes a billionaire's disguise for weakness."
