Chapter 6 - The Broken AltarThe security intercom on the kitchen wall crackled to life.

"Mr. Whitaker?"

It was Chief Inspector Vance’s head of private security, speaking through the encrypted comm-link. "We have an uninvited visitor at the outer gates. Vanessa Vale. She’s demanding entry to retrieve her personal effects, and she brought a camera crew from a tabloid network with her."

Evan didn't even blink. He gently untangled himself from his children, stood up, and walked over to the wall-mounted console. He pressed the speaker button.

"Let her in," Evan said calmly.

"Sir?" the security chief asked, sounding slightly surprised. "Protocol dictates we lock her out permanently per your orders last night."

"Let her in," Evan repeated, his voice smooth as glass. "Let her drive all the way up to the front steps. I want the tabloid crew to get every single shot. Let the world see how a gold-digger tries to salvage a sinking ship."

"Understood, boss. Opening gates now."

Evan turned back to the kitchen island, where Sophie and Caleb were happily cutting into their pancakes. He offered them a warm, reassuring smile. "Finish your breakfast, kids. Daddy has to take out the trash one last time."

Fifteen minutes later, the roar of a sleek white Mercedes coupe echoed up the driveway, screeching to a halt right in front of the grand marble terrace.

The passenger door flew open, and Vanessa stepped out.

She looked a wreck. Her designer hair was windblown, her makeup smeared from a sleepless night of panic and outrage, and her designer clothes looked like she had slept in them on a park bench. Trailing closely behind her was a cameraman from a notorious gossip network, holding a rig on his shoulder, filming her every dramatic step.

Vanessa marched up the steps, her eyes blazing with desperate fury. She slammed her fist against the massive mahogany front door before it could even be opened.

The heavy door swung open instantly.

Evan stood in the doorway, his hands casually shoved into the pockets of his dark jeans. He didn't look angry; he looked remarkably bored, as if he were waiting for a delivery driver who was thirty minutes late.

"Evan!" Vanessa shrieked, playing directly to the trailing camera lens, throwing the back of her hand dramatically against her forehead. "How dare you lock me out? How dare your thugs treat me like a common criminal after everything I’ve sacrificed for you and those ungrateful brats!"

The cameraman zoomed in tightly on her face, capturing the high-drama performance in full 4K resolution.

Evan didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply tilted his head and watched her with cold detachment.

"Sacrificed, Vanessa?" Evan asked, his voice cutting through her monologue like a scalpel. "Is that what you call stealing four million dollars from my children's trust funds while pretending to plan a wedding?"

Vanessa’s jaw snapped shut. The dramatic performance vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced by sheer, naked terror.

"How—how do you know about that?" she stammered, stepping back.

"Federal marshals know about it, too," Evan replied smoothly. "And by the time you finish your little tabloid interview today, the local prosecutor's office will already have your bank records, your offshore shell company deeds, and your arrest warrant waiting on the desk."
