Chapter 9 - The Billionaire’s True Investment"You know," Evan said, stepping just a little closer, his slate-gray eyes softening as he watched Sophie and Caleb tumble onto the grass in a fit of giggles. "For years, I thought my greatest achievements were the companies I built, the acquisitions I closed, and the billions I accumulated in bank accounts."

Grace turned her head to look at him, listening intently.
"I spent my whole life chasing security, thinking that if I had enough money, nothing could ever hurt my family," Evan continued, his voice dropping into a quiet, introspective register. "I was an idiot. I built a fortress of wealth, but I forgot to check who was guarding the inside gate."
He reached out, his hand gently brushing against Grace’s fingers where she held the clipboard. She didn't pull away.
"You didn't have money, or titles, or corporate leverage," Evan whispered, looking directly into her dark, steady eyes. "All you had was courage. And you used it to protect my children when they had nobody else in the world. That’s worth more than every corporation I own combined."
Grace’s breath hitched slightly. The warmth of his hand sent a sudden, electric shiver up her arm.
"I just did what any decent person would do," Grace murmured, though her voice lacked its usual defensive firmness.
"No, Vanessa proved that most people look away," Evan said softly. "You didn't look away. You stepped into the fire."
Across the lawn, little Sophie suddenly yelled out, waving her arms in the air.
"Daddy! Grace! Come join the game! The puppy caught the ball!"
Evan and Grace both laughed, the tension breaking as they turned to look at the two children playing under the bright Connecticut sun.
"Duty calls," Grace smiled, starting to turn away.
Evan caught her wrist—not with the iron grip he had used on Vanessa, but with a gentle, hesitant pressure that begged her to stay.
"Wait," Evan said.
May you like
Grace turned back, her heart beating a little faster against her ribs. "Yes?"
"Stay," Evan said, his voice thick with a new, permanent promise. "Not just as the director of the household. Stay as part of the family. For good."
