Chapter 5 - Dawn of a New EraThe morning sun rose over Greenwich, casting a golden hue across the immaculate lawns of the Whitaker estate. But the atmosphere inside the mansion was entirely transformed.

For the first time in two years, there was no sound of a shrill voice barking orders down the grand staircase at 7:00 AM.

Instead, the aroma of fresh pancakes, scrambled eggs, and warm maple syrup drifted up from the expansive country kitchen.

Sophie sat at the mahogany breakfast counter in her favorite blue pajamas—not the stiff, uncomfortable dresses Vanessa always forced her into. Across from her, little Caleb was happily feeding pieces of banana to his repaired brown rabbit, whose blue-stitched ear sat proudly upright.

Grace stood by the stove, flipping a golden pancake with a relaxed smile on her face. Her cheek still bore the faint yellow-and-purple remnants of the bruise, but her posture was light, free of the tension that had gripped her since the day she took the job.

"Here you go, kids," Grace said, sliding two plates loaded with fruit and pancakes across the counter.

"Thank you, Miss Grace," Sophie said, her voice bright and clear, completely devoid of the frightened whisper she had used all week.

A soft scrape of leather shoes announced the arrival of the master of the house.

Evan walked into the kitchen wearing a simple black cashmere sweater and dark jeans. No fake beard. No mud on his boots. Just a father looking at his children with a heart full of rediscovered life.

Sophie froze for a second, her fork hovering near her plate. For a fleeting second, the old reflex of bracing for rules and reprimands flickered in her eyes.

Evan noticed it. He stopped in his tracks, crouching down to her eye level so he didn't tower over her.

"Hey, princess," Evan said softly, reaching out to gently touch her hand. "Do you remember the two sets of rules?"

Sophie bit her lip and nodded slowly. "The rules when you're gone... and the rules when you're here."

Evan shook his head, his throat tightening. He reached up and gently tucked a lock of dark-blond hair behind her ear.

"Starting today, there is only one set of rules in this house," Evan promised, looking straight into her clear, innocent eyes. "Rule number one: You are safe here. Always. Nobody will ever raise their voice, or their hand, in this home ever again. Daddy is home for good."

Sophie’s eyes welled with tears—not tears of fear, but of profound, long-overdue relief. She threw her small arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder with a fierce, desperate grip. Caleb scrambled off his stool and joined the hug, wrapping his tiny arms around Evan's waist along with his beloved rabbit.

Evan closed his eyes, holding them both tight.

Grace turned away from the stove for a moment, wiping a stray tear from her own eye with the back of her hand, feeling a sudden, deep sense of belonging she hadn't known she was looking for.

Just then, the heavy iron security gates at the end of the long estate driveway buzzed loudly.
