Chapter 7 - The Final ExitThe camera light on the reporter's rig blinked aggressively, recording every twitch of Vanessa’s face as the billionaire delivered the coup de grâce.

"You're... you're bluffing," Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling so violently the microphone on the cameraman's rig picked up every rattle. "You wouldn't... we had a life together. You loved me!"
"I loved a reflection you projected," Evan said, his tone devoid of any lingering emotion. "A carefully constructed mask of elegance and grace that hid a petty, cruel manipulator who terrified children and abused the people who protected them."
He turned his head slightly, shouting into the open foyer behind him.
"Grace! Bring out the boxes."
A moment later, Grace stepped out onto the terrace carrying two large cardboard storage boxes filled with Vanessa’s designer shoes, expensive cosmetics, and personal trinkets. She didn't look at Vanessa with triumph or malice; her expression was completely neutral, professional, and detached.
Grace dropped the boxes right at the edge of the marble terrace, near Vanessa’s feet.
"All your personal belongings," Grace said quietly. "Nothing of the Whitaker estate is inside. Check them if you like."
Vanessa stared down at the cardboard boxes as if they were coffins. Her grand social climb in Greenwich—the charity galas, the high-society magazines, the multi-million-dollar wedding invitations—had imploded in less than twenty-four hours, reduced to two cardboard boxes on a dirty welcome mat.
"You'll pay for this, Evan Whitaker," Vanessa snarled, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss as she realized the cameras were still rolling and she had no choice save face. "You and your little maid think you've won? This isn't over! I'll ruin you!"
"Try," Evan said softly.
He stepped back inside the foyer and gripped the heavy brass handles of the double doors.
"Have a nice life, Vanessa."
Bang.

The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut with a thunderous finality, locking automatically from the inside with a heavy digital click.
Outside on the terrace, Vanessa stood alone with her two cardboard boxes, staring at a closed door while the tabloid cameraman continued to film every humiliating second of her defeat.
