Chapter 10 - A NEW DAWN IN NEW YORKThree days later, the sun broke through the gray New York clouds, casting a warm, golden light across the manicured gardens of the Caruso estate.

The federal indictments against Dominic had mysteriously vanished—replaced overnight by a sealed federal RICO case targeting Salvatore Maroni, Jack Mason, and the entire corrupt leadership of the commission. By sunset, the news anchors on every major network were broadcasting the largest syndicate takedown in the history of the city.

Inside the grand living room, the marble floor was quiet once more.

Dominic sat in his high-backed leather armchair by the window, a cup of coffee resting untouched on the side table.

Footsteps padded softly across the rug.

He didn't need to look up to know who it was.

Clara stood beside his chair, looking significantly stronger than she had in that cold basement upstate, though the dark circles under her honey-brown eyes still spoke of old nightmares. Holding her hand tightly was a four-year-old girl wearing pale blue pajamas covered in tiny yellow moons.

"Mr. Caruso," Lily announced with exaggerated seriousness, marching right up to his knee just as she had three days ago.

Dominic smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his eyes for the first time in five years. He reached down, scooped the little girl up into his arms, and settled her right onto his lap.

"Yes, boss?" Dominic asked softly.

Lily reached into her pajama pocket, pulled out a second smooth gray pebble, and pressed it firmly into his palm.

"This one is for mommy," Lily whispered, pointing toward Clara with a bright, brilliant smile that looked exactly—unmistakably—like her mother's. "And this one is for you."

Dominic closed his fingers around the stones, wrapping his arms around both of them as the morning light poured through the windows, finally driving away the last shadows of the past.
