Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH IN THE BASEMENTClara’s fingers gripped Dominic’s coat sleeve with surprising strength, as if afraid he would dissolve into mist the moment she let go.

"Lily..." Clara gasped, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "Did... did Jack find her? Did he hurt my baby?"

Dominic froze, the warmth of the reunion instantly replaced by a sharp, cutting realization.

"Your... your baby?" Dominic repeated, staring down at her. "Clara, what are you saying? Rachel told me—"

"Rachel is my sister," Clara interrupted, coughing weakly as Marcus stepped forward to adjust her IV drip. "When Owen locked me away here five years ago, I was already three months pregnant with your child. Owen didn't want the scandal. He threatened to kill the baby the moment it was born if I didn't give her up."

Clara closed her eyes, a fresh wave of agony washing over her face.

"When Lily was born in this very room, Rachel risked her life to smuggle her out. Rachel promised she would raise her safely under your roof, right under the noses of the men who put me here, until the day you finally discovered the truth."

Dominic sat back on his heels, the puzzle pieces finally snapping together with brutal, agonizing clarity.

Rachel hadn't been just a maid who wandered into his estate. She had been a guardian angel, a mother by proxy who had spent three years protecting his flesh and blood while living in the very lion's den of the man who imprisoned her sister.

And Dominic had barely given her a second thought beyond a polite nod in the hallway.

"She's safe," Dominic said softly, his voice thick with unshed tears. "Lily is back at the estate. She’s safe, Clara. I swear it on my life."

Clara let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, her head falling back against the pillow. "Thank God... thank God you got the letter."

Suddenly, the encrypted radio on Marcus’s tactical vest crackled to life.

“Boss! Boss, we got a breach at the main estate! A federal tactical team—backed by unknown armed contractors—just hit the front gates. They’re saying we have forty minutes before the entire commission moves in to seize your assets!”

Dominic stood up slowly, the raw grief in his eyes instantly hardening back into the cold, calculating fury of the most feared boss in New York.

"Marcus," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a lethal register.

"Yeah, boss?"

"Get Clara into the chopper. Take her to my private estate in Vermont. Put a 24-hour armed detail around her room. If a fly gets within fifty feet of that house without my clearance, shoot it down."

"And you?" Marcus asked, eyeing the heavily armed hallway outside.

Dominic pulled back the slide of his SIG Sauer, checking the loaded chamber with a sharp, metallic click.

"I have some overdue business with the commission."
