Chapter 6 - THE RECKONING AT DAWNThe gunshot shattered the quiet stillness of the third-floor study, the sound muffled only slightly by the heavy oak door and expensive Persian rugs.

Jack stumbled backward, his breath catching in a ragged gasp as the force of the round spun him into the bookshelves. Heavy leather-bound volumes rained down around him like falling masonry. His Beretta slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.
Before Jack could recover, Dominic was out from behind the desk, moving with the terrifying, explosive speed of a cornered panther.
He didn't fire a second shot. Bullets were too clean for a betrayal of this magnitude.
Dominic closed the distance in two strides, grabbed Jack by the lapels of his tailored suit jacket, and slammed him against the mahogany bookshelf with enough force to splinter the oak framing.
"You touch my daughter," Dominic growled, pressing the barrel of the SIG squarely under Jack’s chin, "and I don't just kill you. I dismantle everything you've ever built, brick by bloody brick, until your name is wiped off the face of this earth."
Jack coughed, a spray of dark blood staining his immaculate white shirt collar. A twisted, bloody smile stretched across his lips.
"You... you think I’m the only one, Dom?" Jack wheezed, his eyes wide and feverish. "Check... check the Swiss account codes. The federal indictments aren't coming from the DOJ... they're coming from inside the commission. The entire syndicate voted to cut you loose a month ago."
Dominic didn't blink. He didn't let up the pressure.
"Let them come," Dominic whispered.
With a swift, brutal motion, Dominic brought the butt of his pistol down across Jack’s temple. The lieutenant’s eyes rolled back, and he slumped sideways onto the rug, unconscious and bleeding freely.
Dominic turned around, lowering the hammer of his weapon.
Father Thomas was pressed hard against the corner, clutching his wooden crucifix so tightly his knuckles were white.
"Father," Dominic said, his breathing only slightly elevated. "Take the hard drive from my desk. Take the manila envelope. Walk out the service entrance, get into my black Lincoln downstairs, and drive straight to St. Jude’s. Do not stop for red lights. Do not talk to anyone."

The old priest swallowed hard, staring at the unconscious man bleeding on the carpet. "And you, Mr. Caruso?"
"I have a family reunion to attend," Dominic said coldly. "Upstate."
