Chapter 1 - The Shattered CalmNathan’s hand froze on the doorknob. The digital clock on the dashboard of his car flashed 5:19 PM. A conference call had ended early, giving him an unexpected eleven minutes of freedom. He had smiled, thinking of surprising his second wife, Chloe, and his two children, six-year-old Leo and eight-year-old Maya.

Instead, a chilling silence hung over the hallway, broken only by muffled, terrified whimpers.

Dropping his briefcase, Nathan pushed the living room door open. The air felt thick, charged with sudden, suffocating panic. There they were, huddled on the Persian rug. Leo was curled into a tight, shivering ball, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks. Standing right above them, breathing heavily, was Chloe. In her right hand, a thick wooden clothes hanger hovered in the air. Her face, usually a mask of gentle domestic perfection, was twisted into an ugly snarl of cold fury.

"Chloe!" Nathan roared, the sound tearing out of his throat with enough force to make her flinch.

Chloe dropped the hanger instantly, its clatter against the hardwood floor sounding like a gunshot. The transformation was instantaneous. Her expression melted from malice into wide-eyed, trembling innocence.

"Nathan! Oh, thank God you're home," Chloe choked out, her voice cracking with theatrical despair. "Leo knocked over my mother's antique vase—the one heirloom I have left! I... I lost my temper for a second. I was just trying to discipline them, you know how hard it is to manage them alone!"

Nathan didn't hear her. His entire world narrowed down to his daughter, Maya.

The little girl slowly uncurled her arms from around her younger brother. She had taken the brunt of it; a raw, angry red welt already bloomed across her small forearm. She was shaking so violently her teeth chattered.

Nathan dropped to his knees, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He reached out gently, terrified he might break her if he touched her too hard. "Maya, sweetie... Daddy's here. Look at me. You're safe."

Maya raised her tear-soaked eyes. She looked past Nathan, casting a terrified glance toward Chloe, who was nervously twisting her wedding ring, shooting venomous, silent warnings across the room.

Then, Maya reached up, grabbed the collar of Nathan's shirt, and pulled him down close. Her breath smelled faintly of peppermint, and her whisper was so soft it barely registered above the hum of the refrigerator, yet it carried the weight of an avalanche.

“Dad… she was there when Mom died.”

Nathan’s breath caught in his lungs. The room seemed to spin on its axis.

Elena. His first wife. The woman whose tragic car crash two years ago had shattered his soul. The woman the police had ruled an accidental drowning after her car veered off a desolate coastal cliff.

Chloe had only met Elena once or twice at mutual charity events before Elena passed. Or so Nathan had always been told.

Nathan slowly turned his head to look at Chloe. The color had completely drained from his wife’s face, leaving her looking like a corpse under the warm living room lights.
