Chapter 3 - The Confession in the KitchenWhile Adrian and Marcus dissected personnel files in the study, the tension in the staff quarters downstairs had reached a boiling point.

Rachel Carter paced back and forth across the polished linoleum of the industrial kitchen, holding little Emma tight against her hip. The heavy oak doors leading out to the hallway were bolted from the outside, guarded by two massive men in dark suits who didn't even blink when Rachel approached them to ask for water.
“Mommy, I’m hungry,” Emma whispered, rubbing her sleepy eyes.
“Shh, sweetie. Just a little longer,” Rachel whispered back, her voice trembling.
She wasn’t stupid. She knew the kind of man Adrian Vale was. In Chicago, everyone knew the legend of the Vale Syndicate—a silent empire built on iron discipline and total ruthlessness. If Adrian believed someone in this house had a hand in his wife’s death, heads were literally going to roll, and innocent bystanders like her might easily get swept away in the purge.
The heavy kitchen door suddenly unlocked with a sharp click.
Rachel spun around, bracing herself.
It wasn't a guard. It was Vanessa Hale.
Vanessa walked into the kitchen with her usual poised, measured stride. Her blonde hair was tied back in a sleek, professional chignon, and she wore a crisp cream blouse and tailored gray trousers. She looked like an executive stepping into a boardroom rather than a suspect trapped in a lockdown.
“Rachel,” Vanessa said smoothly, offering a small, comforting smile. “Are you and Emma holding up all right? Those brutes outside can be quite intimidating.”
Rachel instinctively stepped backward, shielding Emma with her body. “We’re fine, Ms. Hale. Just… waiting to hear what’s going on.”
Vanessa walked over to the stainless-steel counter and poured herself a glass of water from a pitcher. Her hand didn't shake. Not a single drop spilled.
“It’s absurd, isn’t it?” Vanessa said, taking a slow sip. “Mr. Vale losing his temper over a child’s toy. A silly recorder left behind by a depressed woman, and now the entire house is on lockdown.”
Rachel frowned, her protective instincts flaring up. “Depressed? Mr. Vale’s wife didn't seem depressed from what I’ve heard.”
Vanessa turned her head, her blue eyes narrowing just a fraction as she looked at the new housekeeper. The warmth vanished from her smile, replaced by something cold and sharp.
“You’ve only been here six months, Rachel. You didn't know Claire. You didn't see the late-night panic attacks, the erratic phone calls, the way she stumbled through the halls looking like a ghost before she finally drove her car off that cliff.” Vanessa stepped closer, her voice dropping to a low, melodic hiss. “Some people aren't built for a life like this. They crack under the pressure. And when they crack, they try to drag everyone else down with them.”
“She was warning someone,” Rachel blurted out before she could stop herself. “On the tape… she said someone in this house was spying on them.”
Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks.
The silence in the kitchen became absolute.
Vanessa slowly turned to face Rachel, her expression completely mask-like. “How do you know what was on the tape, Rachel? Were you standing right behind Mr. Vale like a common eavesdropper?”
Before Rachel could reply, the kitchen door swung open with a bang.
Marcus Reed stood in the doorway, flanked by two armed guards. His eyes scanned the room and locked instantly onto Vanessa.
“Ms. Hale,” Marcus said, his voice flat and dangerous. “Mr. Vale wants to see you in the study right now. Don't bother packing a bag.”

Vanessa didn't flinch. She simply adjusted her cuffs, smoothed her blouse, and offered Marcus a chillingly polite smile.
“Of course, Marcus. Lead the way. I have a few things I’ve been waiting to tell Adrian myself.”
